Out of the Box Magazine

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Meira’s artistic endeavour began when he joined the printmaking course at the School of Fine Arts at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In early 1990, Carlos moved to Portugal where he developed his unique style of paper sculpture. He returned to Brazil in 1996 and settled in Florianopolis where he further strengthened his illustration side. He has held six solo exhibitions and illustrated several books since then. Carlos Meira  has now devoted himself to illustration and paper sculpture having worked as an artist, designer and art director within the advertising industry. He also runs his  blog  where you can catch-up on his latest work.

You might’ve already seen similar works on the pages of our magazine. Here is other works by another illustrator. Canadian artist Sean Williams lives and works in Edmonton. He is the art director of the Canadian branch of one of the world’s largest advertising companies—DDB. The portraits that you’re about to see are not made out of random words. For example, all the musicians were created using the words of their song’s lyrics. In the case of Mr. White and Jesse Pinkman from the Breaking Bad TV series were used their catch phrases from the series.

Most of us rush through our everyday lives without noticing the beautiful things around us. Dutch illustrator Tineke Meirink offers a creative and playful way of engaging with our surroundings – just stop and watch, she says. Her blog “Stop:Watch” tickles the imagination with a collection of simple street objects that she has given life to by adding a minimal digital illustration

Violaine & Jeremy  is a graphic arts and illustration studio based in Paris (France) formed by Violaine Orsoni and Jeremy Schneider. They have created a beautiful series of surreal illustrations which blend the natural and human worlds .

To illustrate  the  slogan  “Letters Can Kill”,  Lightfarm Studios  has made letters  formed   through  the faces  of various  dictators  such as   Hitler ,  Bin Laden , Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong II. A  campaign realized  by  the  Japanese   automotive   brand  Mitsubishi, to  motivate  the drivers  to stop   texting while   driving . This is a   nice   ad  for  an excellent   cause .  It’s  too  bad  that so  many individuals  are so freaking retarded  that they wont  stop  texting  while   driving   until  they get put  through  vehicular accident .

Although  Robert Pattinson  has been included in this list, most illustrators tend to choose  celebrities  who have more wrinkles, or a big nose, or just facial personality that isn’t too symmetric and pretty. An example of this is literary Noble Prize winner  Jose Saramago  (who I met once at a book signing) whose face works wonders in caricature form… it is like someone was modeling him in plasticine. Quite accurate with his physical appearance, well used to be, as he unfortunately passed away in 2010.

Tang YauHoong i s an artist, illustrator,  graphic designer  living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With a passion for creative thinking, he creates art that is conceptual, surreal and fun in a simplistic and unique way. He works with various clients for advertising, editorial, and many other design projects. When he is not doing commercial work he enjoys making art and immerses himself in his personal projects.
